Shortly after takeoff from Colombo to Sydney, a Sri Lankan Airlines flight was struck by a lightning strike. The incident forced an emergency return to Colombo. Passengers heard a tremendous noise and saw sparks erupting from the engines. Although the engines sustained minor damage, all 207 passengers and 16 crew members were safe.
